Birmingham Mayor Is Backed by Blair

Birmingham was thrust into the forefront of the debate over elected mayors as the Prime Minister yesterday singled out the city for reform, insisting it was "the way forward". In a move to further dismay council leader Mike Whitby, Mr Blair added his weight to the campaign for a single leader to run the city, just days after the Tories outlined their vision of a "pan- city" executive mayor for the West Midlands.

Bia Seeks Autonomy From Eu for Security Measures

Birmingham International Airport has called for EU competition measures to be lifted so that it can take control of its own security operations. Joe Kelly, acting managing director of the airport, said yesterday that he wished he could bring all security under the airport's authority, but that legislation meant contracts had to be open for private bids.
