Adecco has reiterated that it wants a friendly takeover of rival recruiter Michael Page International as it posted a better-than- expected quarterly net profit and strong margins despite the tough trading environment.

Second-quarter net profit dropped five per cent to pounds 168 million but beat average estimates as a one-off pounds 28.5 million gain from modified French social charges boosted the bottom line.
