Mortgages are set to become still scarcer and dearer, while quickening inflation makes it impossible for the Bank of England to cut interest rates enough to prevent a wider economic slowdown.

Yesterday the Bank reported nearly 43 per cent of all mortgages lenders expect to cut back lending further in the coming three months in its latest Credit Conditions Survey.
