Birmingham International Airport is on course with its expansion despite the woes of the airline industry which yesterday saw low- cost carrier Ryanair post an 85 per cent plunge in first-quarter profits.

Ryanair, which flies to 35 destinations from BIA, said spiralling fuel costs were to blame for its profits falling to pounds 16 million compared with the same period last year. And with its fuel bill having risen by 93 per cent to pounds 289.6 million in the three months ending in June, it warned it could make a full-year loss of up to pounds 47 million.
