On this day:1297: Scottish patriot William Wallace defeated the army of Edward 1 at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. 1841: The London to Brighton commuter express train began regular service taking just 105 minutes. 1895: The original FA Cup was stolen from a shop in Birmingham. It was never recovered. After a replica trophy had been presented to Lord Kinnaird for services to the FA, a new one was made by Bradford jewellers Fattorini & Sons and was won appropriately in its first year by Bradford City. 1905: A government report claimed that rural lunacy was on the increase because of the tedious nature of country life. 1968: Newspapers reported the development of the epidural for painless childbirth. It was claimed this would allow a woman to read the paper as she gave birth. 1999: It emerged that great grandmother Melita Norwood, who was 87 and living in Kent, had been a Soviet spy. 2001: Terroristslaunched an attack on America. Two passenger planes were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center - with the Twin Towers subsequently collapsing. Meanwhile, two further planes were hijacked, one crashing into the Pentagon and another crashing in Pennsylvania.
