Athletics: Harriers Collect Bronze

Summary

Birchfield Harriers fought back to win bronze team medals at the Nike AAA National Men's Six Stage Road Relay at a rain swept Sutton Park on Saturday, writes Tom McCook. Matt Shaw completed the first 5.85km stage in 17:25 to give Tipton Harriers a two-second lead at the head of the 65-club field. Mark Dalkins then went round in 17:58 to return in 19th position, two seconds and the same number of places ahead of Coventry Godiva Harriers' 1997 national champion Stefan White.

Phil Hinch, who joined Tipton earlier this year from Birchfield, kept the Black Country club in front from Sale Harriers Manchester and Matt Lole charged though to advance Godiva 16 places to fifth. Despite losing ground due to confusion in the changeover area, 20- year old Paul Moores pulled back seven positions for Birchfield on the second stage with an 18:03 lap. Spencer Barden took Belgrave into the lead by half-way as Wilfred Taragon took the Stags into the top nine whilst both Tipton and Coventry lost ground. On Stage Four, Phil Nicholls took Tipton back up to fourth and national cross country champion Glyn Tromans clawed Godiva up to seventh, one place ahead of Birchfield's Martin Whitehouse.
