Summary


The second round of skirmishes between the English & Welsh Defence League and its opponents took place in Birmingham the weekend before last. Innocent bystanders will have noticed that the pitched battle had a different venue this time.

One reason for this was the police's adoption of new powers to outlaw demonstrations in Bullring. I assume that such powers could be taken because the shopping centre is now private land, and, as such, the usual rights to protest (enshrined in our non-existent constitution) do not apply. Having already elected to ban smokers, buskers and Big Issue sellers from Bullring, it took little effort to extend the ban to demonstrators.
