Some reports suggested last night that the threat to Gordon Brown's position had been crushed with the decision by Labour's National Executive Committee not to respond.

Rebellious backbenchers have been calling on the party to issue nomination papers allowing MPs to put forward an alternative leadership candidate. If enough of them did so, a contest would take place in which Mr Brown could be replaced.
