Yesterday's announcement by the Department for Transport of a pounds 128 million grant towards the long-awaited redevelopment of Birmingham's New Street Station is good news. . .as far as it goes.
The problem is that pounds 128 million, although in itself a large amount of public money, will do no more than set the starting blocks for the ambitious pounds 550 million Gateway project. If the council-led partnership planning the refurbishment of the city's dank and dismal railway station does not get its hands on two further Government grants totalling pounds 223 million, the transformation of New Street cannot go ahead as planned and Birmingham may have to cut costs and devise a smaller and less satisfactory scheme.See the full content of this document
