Wilhelm Backhaus, mercurial in youth, thoughtful and reflective in later years, was one of the major and most long-lived pianists of the last century.
Born in 1884 and dying as recently as 1969, he had an extensive recording career, and one which included the first-ever recording of a piano concerto (an abridged version of the Grieg in 1909).See the full content of this document
