I didn't manage to get to Bournville Musical Theatre Company's version of Chess last week, but I must mention that it is now 50 years since John Clay, then aged 14, joined the group for The Pirates of Penzance in the now-mothballed Cadbury Concert Hall.
John, a former police officer, has a thrilling bass voice.
