As the biggest storm of the winter lashed Britain, the scene from our bedroom window was incredible. The gusts of wind were so strong that an empty crisp packet was picked up and hurled against a hedge.

A tiny sparrow was forced to realign its flight path and narrowly avoided landing on a garden post, instead of its intended target, a tree branch.
