Japanese electronics giant Toshiba plans to scale down the production of personal computers at its domestic factory, which will specialise in development, and boost outsourcing to foreign manufacturers, it has emerged. According to sources, production at the Tokyo facility will gradually be reduced in the next fiscal year, and the plant will begin specialising in developing and trial manufacturing high-value-added products such as units with internal DVD drives.

The company -which has unveiled what it claims is the world's smallest hard drive for next generation mobile products -will shift PC production to its overseas factories. Moreover, the company plans to increase its outsourcing of production to foreign firms, mainly for low-end models, from 30 per cent to more than 40 per cent, sources said.
