A maximum of five people died in the British helicopter which crashed in the Iraqi city of Basra, Defence Secretary Des Browne said last night.

The incident sparked several hours of violent clashes between troops and locals armed with guns, stones, petrol bombs and blast bombs which were hurled at British forces.
