One of the country's first permanent high-tech cancer scanners which could save hundreds of lives and prevent unnecessary surgery has been earmarked for Birmingham.

The pounds 2 million Positron Emission Tomography machine, to be housed at Edgbaston's Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a specially-built bunker, will be operational by next January .
