The thought of rocketing on a bullet train to London or Manchester in half the present time may make some of you feel queasy, but it is an exciting prospect for regular commuters like me - it really is astounding to think how far rail travel has come to allow such speedy journeys not only to be possible technologically, but also to be within our sights.
So often in our history, new transport links have helped push forward progress. In the 19th century, it was the steam locomotive; in the 20th, it was our motorways and airports and in the 21st, I believe it will be high-speed rail. Europe is marching ahead of us in the rail stakes - high-speed rail is a daily reality there and travel is greener and more efficient.See the full content of this document
