Richard Strauss: Orchestral Works Vol.7 -Tonhalle Orchestra/ David Zinman (Arte Nova Classics 74321 98496)This is the final volume in Arte Nova's (not quite comprehensive) collection of Richard Strauss' orchestral works, with the disc's main work -the 1897 symphonic poem Don Quixote -the last item in a three-year recording cycle.

Given this collaborative history, it is not surprising that the Zurich-based Tonhalle Orchestra and conductor David Zinman sound so purposeful and assured here. Excellent woodwind and incisive upper brass contribute a lot to a sprightly approach which delivers drama efficiently but effectively and generates a convincing and bright narrative momentum through the ten variations.
