The new-broom regime at Chamberlin & Hill, led by chief executive Tim Hair, impressed the stock market yesterday with a confident pledge to develop the Walsall foundries company into a more broadly based engineering group seeking to do "difficult things" and do them well.

The first consequence of Mr Hair's shake-up has been a pounds 831,000 loss for the year to March, reported yesterday, with sales down five per cent to pounds 39 million.
