Summary
Dvorak Cello Concerto, Piano Concerto Regis I bought the Supraphon LP of this recording of the concerto in the 1960s, lost it, and have yearned for it ever since. This was an early 1950s performance from the young Rostropovich.
His reading of this greatest of all cello concertos is impassioned, brilliant technique totally at the service of this music of heart-breaking nostalgia. I honestly don't think there is any other recording to match this, with Talich's empathetic direction of a galvanised Czech Philharmonic as a bonus --and don't forget this performance was surely an overt expression of Czech nationalism at a time when that country was so oppressed.See the full content of this document
