Bridget Jones, and her male equivalents, are missing out in more ways than one. Being single was portrayed as an emotional trauma for the fictional star. But the childless are also increasingly missing out on a range of benefits and perks from the Treasury. Yesterday's prebudget statement contained something for pensioners and drivers.

But the biggest winners were parents. Those on lower incomes did particularly well, but all parents will benefit. Maternity leave lasts longer, pays better and can now be transferred to dad.
