Summary
A 34.5 per cent UK turnout rate for the European Elections. This raises the issue of political credibility at a time when EU powers are poised to increase with the Lisbon Treaty.
Of those of us who did cast our vote, how many of us really made an informed decision? How many of us didn't vote because we simply don't know enough? Given that 75 per cent of our laws are made in the European Parliament, isn't this lack of awareness unacceptable? Europe plays an increasing role in every aspect of our lives. We read about and feel the effects of EU red tape and are quick to start sounding Eurosceptic, but what we really need is to gain a better understanding of the EU. As Professor Alan Riley suggested, we need to "recognise what works, and what does not, and then build alliances and run a campaign to remodel the EU so that it works better and more in our interests".See the full content of this document
