I can recall (even now) that on my first day as an articled clerk (as I was then called, we now call them "Trainee Solicitors") a fearsome grey haired partner in my firm told me how privileged I was; not to be training with a top Birmingham firm, not even to be embarking on a career in the professions, but to start with an unblemished reputation and standing within the firm and the community at large.
My newly discovered colleagues and I were challenged to preserve the privilege as we started off in the world of paid employment. Fast forward 20 years and his contemporary might also have said how important it is in the 21st century to do business responsibly.
