After the Adam HollioakeKeith Medlycott axis as captain and coach was broken, initially by the former's announcement about premature retirement, English cricket's most successful county turned to glovemen to oversee future progress.

To outsiders, if not the playing staff at the Oval, Jonathan Batty was something of a surprise as Hollioake's successor as captain while Australian Steve Rixon was selected ahead of English candidates to replace Medlycott.
