Death Books of 'Real Sherlock Holmes' Go Under Hammer

Summary

Nearly 4,000 files detailing the strange and often gruesome deaths investigated by the man described as Sherlock Holmes' living successor are to be put up for auction.

The files - hand-written index cards dating from 1905 to 1932 and mostly covering deaths in London and the Home Counties - belonged to eminent forensic pathologist Sir Bernard Spilsbury and were discovered in a long lost filing cabinet by a distant relative who had inherited them. They will go under the hammer at Sotheby's in London, on July 17 and are expected to fetch up to pounds 9,000.
