I have always been hugely envious of a friend who, each season, throws out all last year's fashions and brings in a whole host of new items. She figures, very wisely, that she spends less on new clothes than someone like me who just seems to scatter buy all year round. While her initial outlay may well exceed what I fork out at the start of a season, by the end it's my bank account that suffers because I just keep adding and adding to my wardrobe week by week.

But however hard I try, I, like most people, have more than a few items languishing in my cupboards that I know should no longer be there. The tootight jumper that I haven't worn for years; a pair of outdated trousers that still have the price tag attached; and a mysterious carrier bag, shoved at the back, which has been home for a crumpled skirt I have long forgotten about.
