Three months ago, 27-year-old David Lynes climbed into a boat for his first rowing lesson. Yesterday he revealed why - the website consultant from Worcestershire aims to raise at least pounds 300,000 for charity by taking part in a race across the Indian Ocean. Along with his friend Steve Redgewell, a 24-year-old web developer, Mr Lynes, from Redditch, is in training for the 3,500-mile voyage which will take between 60 and 80 days.

To date, there have only been three successful rows across the ocean and the pair will make it into the history books if they complete the first ever Indian Ocean Rowing Race, due to be held in April 2009.
