It is one of the most profound ironies surrounding the demise in schools of what used to be called domestic science that children today are likely to be experts on fresh food sell-by dates, e- numbers and hygiene but haven't the faintest idea how to cook a roast dinner or knock up a nutritious shepherd's pie.

Design and Technology GCSEs focus primarily on health and safety issues in the kitchen, which is no bad thing, but fail miserably to teach the practical basics of cooking.
