Sub-standard care at a Staffordshire hospital has been highlighted as a "blot on the NHS landscape" at a national conference for consultants as medics were warned health services were about to enter a "dark and dangerous period" due to the credit crunch.

Dr Jonathan Fielden, chairman of the British Medical Association's (BMA) consultants committee, condemned the "aberrant corporate cultures" in hospitals like Stafford Hospital, where at least 400 patients died needlessly.
