Summary


Much has been written of late regarding the relative status of European football clubs. But trying to establish which is the 'leading' or 'most popular' club is an indeterminate chore because these labels are so subjective. Few fans chant "We're the second greatest football team in the world."

Nonetheless, this hasn't prevented the authors of one recent marketing report declaring that Barcelona are now the continent's 'dominant brand', nor Peter Kenyon, Chelsea's chief executive, from saying that his employers will morph into the world's "biggest football club" within a decade. He will first need to ensure his club emulate Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in terms of trophies and tradition before he can even begin to challenge for hegemony in London, let alone the UK.
