Europe's economy lost some of its shine in the second quarter of 2007 as output growth decelerated more significantly than expected in Germany, France and Italy.

The period preceded recent financial market turmoil grounded in fear that defaults in the US mortgage market might snowball into something big enough to unravel otherwise healthy forecasts for growth in Europe and much of the world this year and next.
