Cricket: Reality Ends Riley's Brief Encounter ; Minor Counties

Summary

Herefordshire name a new wicketkeeper for their Minor Counties Championship match against Berkshire tomorrow following veteran Tim Riley's decision to retire while at his peak.

It was like an episode of 'Ripping Yarns' at Colwall a fortnight ago when club secretary Riley was called up to keep wicket on his home ground after a series of late cry-offs. The Mal-vern College master scored an astonishing 120 not out, followed by 49 in the second innings, against Devon. But, at 47, and with a career average of 169.00, Riley has put reality over romance. He is replaced by Kington's Stephen Caple, who comes in for his county debut. Also making his first start will be Water Orton's Caribbean quick bowler Lesroy Irish.
