Dear Editor, The Post is absolutely correct in saying the "extension of the existing runway remains a project the regional importance of which can hardly be overstated" (United front is the way for the runway extension, Post May 2).

Without the extension, the airport will fail to support the regional economy in accessing key emerging markets in Asia and the central and western United States. If the West Midlands is to be able to compete effectively with these markets - both as a trading region and in terms of inward investment - Birmingham International Airport needs to provide efficient connections into the heart of these fast-growing economies. We further need some creative thinking to expedite the process ensuring completion before 2012.
