By the late 1980s, education in this country was reminiscent of the Cultural Revolution in China under Mao where intellectuals and professionals were dragged from their homes by fanatical Red Guards and forced to work in the fields.

Here it had also become easy to get rid of such thorns in the flesh, because head teachers and hand-picked governors who followed the line, local authorities who would never back an individual teacher against their head and the unions who wouldn't defend such members against wrongful dismissal, all conspired to purge the profession of such heretics.
