Syd Howarth, the Aston Villa inside-forward who once held the record transfer fee for a nonLeague player, has died, aged 80, after being admitted for treatment on a leg ulcer at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
The Welshman, then aged 26, joined Villa from Merthyr Town in 1948 for pounds 6,500 --a massive fee for the time --and Villa travelled to Merthyr to play a friendly against the Southern League club as part of the deal. He signed for Villa at a pub in Merthyr Tydfil owned by one of the club's directors.See the full content of this document
