With consumers in the UK set to spend in excess of pounds 13.6 billion online in the run-up to Christmas, local internet retailers are being warned to increase their internet bandwidth in order to cope with the extra demand.

The average consumer is due to spend around pounds 509 on the internet this year, says Birmingham-based Netshield, an increase of 40 per cent since 2006.
