The West Midlands most senior firefighter yesterday criticised the lack of vital facilities available to treat children with severe burns in the region.

West Midlands Fire Service chief fire officer Frank Sheehan said he was "amazed" at having to make a public appeal for funds for an essential child burns unit, which he felt should be provided as part of the health service. Mr Sheehan was speaking in Victoria Square at the launch of the Red Balloon Appeal, which aims to raise cash for a pounds 19 million burns unit at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
