Iqbal Khan grew up in Small Heath in the early 1980s rather than Salford in the early 1970s, but he can recognise much of his own background in Ayub Khan Din's classic comedy East is East.

First staged in Birmingham Rep's studio theatre in 1996, in a three-way co-production with Tamasha Theatre Company and the Royal Court, East is East went on to reach a far wider audience as a Bafta- winning film featuring many of the original cast.
