The recent collapse in the share prices of high street giants such as Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, Argos (Home Retail) and leading restaurant chains follows a plunge in consumer spending in November and December - and confirms a grim analysis of UK household finances.
In October, the price comparison agency uSwitch.com announced that household disposable income had hit the lowest level in a decade and cited steep rises in taxes (up 85 per cent), council tax (up 92 per cent), rents (up 44 per cent), social contributions (up 77 per cent), petrol (up 55 per cent), and heating (up 46 per cent) since 1997.See the full content of this document
