The FTSE 100 Index put aside jitters over Hurricane Rita to surge back above the 5400 level at the close of business for the week Gains by telecoms and tobacco stocks helped the Footsie shrug aside initial hesitance and move ahead in afternoon trading, ending the final session 27.9 points higher at 5413.6p.
