Manufacturing should provide the impetus for the British economy in coming years, boosted by the cheaper pound, as financial services and consumer spending funded by the housing market subside in the aftermath of financial turbulence, writes Nevill Boyd Maunsell.

Andrew Sentance, a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, made the point in a speech at the CBI's headquarters last night in which he examined the implications of the fall in the value of sterling since July.
