A policeman stabbed to death as he tried to make an arrest in Birmingham was last night hailed as a hero by the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police.

Paul Scott-Lee described Detective Constable Michael Swindells, aged 44, as 'a very brave officer' and said it was 'a tragic day'.
