The owners of this brand new 4x4 (left) watched in horror as the pounds 20,000 vehicle disappeared into thick mud. The couple were on holiday in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, when they decided to test their Land Rover Freelander's off-road credentials on a stretch of treacherous mudflats.

But it soon became clear that their pride and joy had more than met its match when it began sinking into the notoriously thick mud on Berrow Beach.
