A farmer's decision to put the welfare of a rare bird species before profits has resulted in a top award, it was announced yesterday.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said Steve Mumford, who manages Lower Farm in Narborough, Norfolk, for farmer Chris Knights, was its Lapwing Champion for 2007.
