Summary

Q. I am owed money by somebody who has been declared bankrupt by another creditor. Can I find out details of the person who petitioned for the bankruptcy, and how much was owed? Is the bankrupt permitted to carry on as a property landlord? A. You should contact the Official Receiver to discuss your claim. It's possible (if the bankrupt has any assets) that a creditors' meeting will be called which you can attend.

The creditor who brought the bankruptcy proceedings is in no stronger position than any others who are owed money, although the Inland Revenue and employees are preferential creditors. The bankrupt can continue to work as a property landlord's agent, but if he owns property this will be seized by the Official Receiver (or possibly an insolvency practitioner if one is appointed), and may be sold to pay the debts.
