Summary
Dear Editor, - What a contrast between the two pictures of Birmingham from St. Philip's, in 1821 and the present, on the front page (Post, Jan 31).
But I wonder if Samuel Lines would have been completely surprised by it? I suspect his painting of 1821 was made to record the open fields between St Philip's and Christ Church before they disappeared under the proposed construction of Waterloo Street, which at the time did not exist (the road on the far left, running down to New Street, is Temple Street, of course).See the full content of this document
