Summary


Dear Editor, - When the former Labour administration of Birmingham City Council established a series of Scrutiny Committees, the idea was to enable councillors, on a cross party basis, to monitor the performance of services.

Parliamentary Select Committees are similar and they take their watchdog role very seriously. They base their Inquiries on evidence rather than preconceptions and Select Committee members closely guard their independence from the Government of the day. It is therefore disturbing that Councillor Frank Coyne, Chairman of the Council's Housing Scrutiny Committee, appears to have decided in advance what conclusions his committee should reach when it reviews of the City Council's performance on homelessness (Post, Nov 24).
