Dear Editor, - While I welcome the promotion of Andrew Adonis who has passionately argued for democratic reform of the House of Lords in the past into government, it is curious that Tony Blair was unable to find anyone in his backbenches suitable for the job just four days after an election.

Despite sweeping to power in 1997 on a manifesto commitment to make the House of Lords 'more representative and democratic', Tony Blair has appointed more Life Peers to the House of Lords than any other Prime Minister in modern history - over 100 more than Margaret Thatcher despite having been in office for less time.
