Summary


Dear Editor, - Patricia Hewitt left the Geneva WTO conference on Saturday before the end of its extended discussion, but not before it had become clear even to some of its most reluctant delegates that if international trade was to proceed fairly in future, the long discredited system of subsidies which has dominated the international trade for the latter part of C20 must be substantially reduced if not abolished and that as early as possible.

The USA in spite of its advocacy of Free Trade has managed to combine this with creating its own protectionist system of trade barriers. At the same time, massive subsidies have developed industries which have dominated and distorted world markets, particularly to the detriment of developing and poor countries which have the capacity to produce similar goods at lower prices.
