Dear Editor, Monday, May 21, marks the start of national " Walk to School Week"; an annual ritual by authorities to encourage kids to get some healthy exercise, reduce congestion and - this year - battle climate change by walking rather than being driven to school.
What's remarkable about this event is how little impact it has had in more than a decade of operation; surveys continue to show steady increases in car use for school runs, with a matching steady decline in children walking to school, especially alone (commonplace once for eight-year olds upwards - now rare for any junior school kids and reducing even for 11-16s).See the full content of this document
