Dear Editor, -The reaction of Mr. Blyth of Hortons Estate to the news that the Grand Hotel, which they own, has been listed Grade 11* (Post, May 8) is predictable. They will leave up the scaffolding and the site could remain empty for years. Oh yes. We'll see.

The first thing to remember is that no one forced Hortons Estate to buy the Grand Hotel in the first place. They saw it as a development 'opportunity' as they call these things nowadays. 'We thought we had a great opportunity to do something really monumental for Birmingham' says Mr. Blyth. Really? Such altruism! The people who demolished the 18th century Theatre Royal in New Street in the sixties said much the same thing. No doubt there are people around who would say it about the plot of ground currently occupied by the Town Hall.
